In March 2024, scientists from across Africa gathered in Cape Town for a three-day workshop that laid the foundation for a new era of coordinated SRM research on the continent.
Co-hosted by CSAG (UCT) and the Degrees Initiative, and led by Dr Chris Lennard and Prof. Babatunde Abiodun, the event brought together researchers from Kenya, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, Uganda, Mali, Benin, and Ghana.
Discussions highlighted shared challenges — limited access to computing, data, and funding — but also progress through new South–South collaborations.
As Dr Vincent Ajayi noted:
“We are not saying that SRM is going to be beneficial, and we are not saying otherwise. We are only analysing its impacts to make informed decisions.”
The workshop concluded with a commitment to develop regional research networks — a step that directly inspired the formation of the ACIRH.
